Helping You Understand What Factors Determine Your Auto Insurance Premium

I don't know about you but I always wondered what factors determined the premium on my auto insurance. Well I am going to hopefully help you out. Some factors may just surprise you and some may make you think. Let's start here.

One of the few most important factors that determine your auto insurance premium is of course the vehicle that you drive. This is one of the few factors you can control or change. The way the insurance company looks at this factor is. One- What are the Collision damage costs? This is one of the main factors in that puts some cars on the "Good car list" which you WANT and the "Bad car list" which you DO NOT want. This has a big impact on the difference of price between one type of car over another. On a less costly note is how attractive the car is to thieves. Vehicles that are on the top of the insurance cost list are usually high horsepower, high dollar or ones that are expensive to repair. So that hot looking sporty car will always cost you more, especially more for the young drivers, because they tend to crash more often. They see it as if you have a high horsepower car you are going to drive it in such a manner, even though this may not be true, you won't be able to change their mind about it. Also if the particular car you own is being crashed a lot by other people this will jack the rate up as well. So it's not only how you drive but how other people are driving that same automobile. On some high-end cars tend to have aluminum body panels; these are more costly to replace then sheet metal.

Another fact you may not know; if you drive an SUV or a larger vechal your Liability insurance will more then likely have a higher premium, because these types of vehicles will cause more damage in an accident.

Here is a helpful hint on which cars are the most and least expensive to insure. I'll start with the most expensive first. These cars in this list are the most expensive due to collision losses. This is the most recent list I could find. Some of these cars might just surprise you. I know it suprised me when I saw my $20,000 car in this list. As you will see it's not just the Expensive cars that cost more, or the Safe cars that cost less. There is a real science in determining insurance cost.

2. Mercedes CL-Class
3. Dodge SRT-4
